HLTH320 –Global and Intercultural Health Issues– 100 points
Goals of the Assignment
For this assignment, students will
1.) Acquire knowledge about a global health issue through research;
2.) Demonstrate understanding of other cultures’ beliefs, values, perspectives, and practices;
3.) Analyze their own intercultural and global competence and resistance to cultural stereotyping;
4.) Discuss willingness to learn from others who are culturally different from themselves.
Students will gain an understanding and appreciation for the resource information available to them by researching two outstanding organizations — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization — as a starting point to explore available information about global health issues.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading public health agency in the world. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, the CDC plays a major role in the education of healthcare professionals and the public with respect to health promotion and disease prevention.
The World Health Organization (WHO), an agency of the United Nations, is concerned with international public health. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is responsible for the World Health Report, a leading international publication on health, and the worldwide World Health Survey.
Sources and Grading Rubric Instructions:
1. Go to the CDC website http://www.cdc.gov/ and the WHO website hhtp:// www.who.int to examine the various portals and links on the home page.
2. Use these and other sources to answer the required questions. DO NOT COPY information directly from the websites or from other sources. Summarize and present information in your own words. Use in-text citations for any material gathered from another source to avoid plagiarism concerns.
3. Use at least three additional references to these two websites including books, journal articles, websites, and research reports from credible sources. A reference page must be included. Papers without in-text citations are considered plagiarism.
4. Formal language plus proper grammar, spelling, word choice, and writing mechanics are expected.
5. Please clarify any questions with your instructor prior to submission.
6. Be sure to comply with the grading rubric below. This assignment requires a demonstration of a mastery level of the Excellence System Global and Intercultural Competencies.
The assignment consists of a professional, scholarly paper, written in APA style, 5-7 pages, plus a title page and reference page. Use 1” margins, 12 point font of Times New Roman or Arial, double spaced. Use sub-headings: Overview and Importance of Health Issue from a Global Perspective, Information Dissemination, Personal Cultural Biases and Intercultural Relations and Communication, Chart for Synthesis of Growth in Intercultural and Global Competency to organize your paper and ensure coverage of the topic.
Overview and Importance of Health Issue from a Global Perspective: Click on the CDC website and go to Global Health link, then Diseases and Conditions and select one topic heading or subtopic related to a global health issue. Examine the same health issue on the WHO website. Provide a brief overview and importance of this global health issue using both the CDC and WHO websites plus other resources. What do you mean when you use the term “global perspective”? Why is the issue you have selected important from a global perspective? Describe in detail any cultural, religious, gender, or political issues or viewpoints that may create biases towards this health issue.
Information Dissemination: Describe specific information/publications relating to this issue used by healthcare providers and/or the public and where/how this may be available. How will you evaluate the reliability of sources and credibility of the information provided? What are some ways to communicate effectively among cultures given possible barriers (cultural, social, or language)? How might a healthcare professional interact successfully with people given cultural, religious, or other differences? Describe a culturally appropriate behavior that a health professional would use to show a shared understanding and resistance to cultural stereotyping.
Personal Cultural Biases, Intercultural Relations and Communication: Describe any cultural biases you personally might have with this health issue or to other cultures. Describe in detail how you might personally interact with patients or their family from cultures different from your own regarding this healthcare issue and give example.
Synthesis of Growth in Intercultural and Global Competency. (see pages 4-5) For this section, complete and submit the chart below to describe your competencies. Review and complete the Excellence System Competency rubric below, and evaluate if you have demonstrated a mastery level of each of the six competencies. Use the form and, for each of the six competencies, provide an example from your assignment and explain in specific ways how you have met the outcome.
Make a copy of and complete the Excellence System chart below (fill in the blanks to the right of each competency) and attach it to your assignment.
Then review the Grading Rubric (see pages 5-7) and match with the competencies on the chart to determine if you have met all the requirements.
